Castel St. Angelo: The Illuminati Base

Angels & Demons Tour / 3 hours

The itinerary of our Angels and Demons Tour of Rome is inspired by the book "Angels and Demons" by Dan Brown. In addition to all of the sites mentioned in the book, our itinerary includes other popular sites of Rome that are not mentioned in the bestseller, but that will be encountered on our way.

This varied itinerary is a great way to see Rome! You will have the opportunity to see both the very popular sites and some incredibly beautiful hidden treasures!

The tour starts from Piazza della Repubblica, near the Termini Station. It is one of the most beautiful squares of Rome and occupies the same area of the Roman baths built by Emperor Diocletian. The most part of the Ancient Structures was transformed by Michelangelo into a Church: St. Maria degli Angeli.

After the visit of this Church your guide will take you to another one: St. Maria della Vittoria. Bernini's Ecstasy of St. Theresa is here, in a lavishly decorated chapel. According to the book, it was one of the Four Altars of Science: Fire.

The walk continues by the Ancient City Walls and you reach Piazza del Popolo, gateway to Rome from the North. The grand square features one of Rome's oldest obelisks as well as a famous Church that contains artworks by Raphael, Bernini and Caravaggio: St. Maria del Popolo. The Second Altar of Science is here: Earth.

The Mausoleum of Augustus is only few steps away. It was the tomb of the first Roman Emperor Octavian and his family. It is a masterpiece of Roman Architecture and was the model for the following Emperors' burials.

You will be walking through the Field of Mars and then reach the Pantheon. It is the best preserved temple of Ancient Rome and dedicated to all the gods. It was converted into a Catholic Church in 608 and hosts teh tombs of important Italian people: King Victor Emmanuel, Queen Margherita and the painter Raphael.

By crossing the Ancient Baths of Nero you will arrive in Navona Square, the Ancient Stadium built by Emperor Domitian. Today, it is a beautiful elegant square decorated by Bernini and other XVI century masters with churches and fountains, including the famous Four Rivers' one. The third Altar of Science is here: water.

Your visit continues to Castel Sant'Angelo. It was the tomb of Emperor Hadrian and many of his successors. It became a fortress in the XV century and then a prison. This was the Illuminati base in the book.
